I’d love to homestead but until I can figure out a way to make a good living off of it, it’s just an expensive hobby with both my wife and I working full time. I’ve experimented enough with rural living to know that taking care of everything yourself is a lot of work. Of course there are a lot of variables but just honing in on location I think this is a decent place to start. I think there is a sweet spot that looks something like a rural unincorporated area of 50-500 within a few miles but several miles from a small town and at least an hour from a city. That one is me.Īnd how can my wife and kids survive without me? The answer always comes down to availability of Human Resources. My answer to my own question of how many acceptable losses in my house is 1.

How do I handle the ugly stuff with as little involvement from the wife and kids as possible. I’ve always looked at these scenarios from these first two points on: I agree that remote is better than an apartment in the city for sure. I guess what I’m really saying is it takes a village to survive, including defense. I am extremely lucky to have this but it comes from cultivating an attitude of being there for each other while respecting privacy. We already have a solid early warning system for anyone who doesn't belong and come out in force if there is an issue. We would definitely have patrols if things got bad, I know that for a fact.

In my area however it doesn't really lay out as "remote" though all of my neighbors and I tend to have large properties housing tends to be near the road so we actually do have communities albeit they may be spread over a mile. I can do a lot of things to help on my property from early warning to denial of easy entry. But I personally would still roll the dice on that rather than being in the suburbs when the hordes come through. Though I get that you are saying remote as in not having neighbors for miles. Having law enforcement with similar values and morals is even more invaluable. Being in an area with other people with similar values and morals is invaluable. There are risks associated with any location but having the ability to grow food is invaluable. If the SHTF then the cities will be a death trap. I understand your sentiment but I have to disagree with not having land and getting away from the cities.
